Research Exchange Meeting between the School of Medicine, Shanghai University and the Neutron Therapy Research Center

May 18, 2023

On April 18, Dean Bin Liu of the School of Medicine (equivalent to a medical faculty in Japan), Shanghai University, China and other stuff members visited Okayama University, where a research exchange meeting was held with the Neutron Therapy Research Center.

The main reason this research exchange meeting was realized was because Shanghai University referred to Okayama University’s medical studies in establishing the School of Medicine and is greatly interested in the efforts of the Neutron Therapy Research Center for frontier research on boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT).

At the start of the meeting, Vice Executive Director for New Medical Research Sites and Director of the Neutron Therapy Research Center, NARUSE Keiji, delivered an address of welcome. Then, Associate Professor MICHIUE Hiroyuki, Vice Director of the center, as well as Research Associate Professor HUANG PENG and others, explained the initiatives. They actively exchanged views with Dean Liu and the other participants.

In addition, the Executive Director for Hospital and Medical Services and Director of Okayama University Hospital, MAEDA Yoshinobu, attended the meeting. The participants deepened their exchange of opinions on the medical system of the hospital, while discussing future collaborations.

The collaboration with Shanghai University stems from the visit made by President Nasu, then Executive Director for Research and Vice President, and Vice Executive Director/URA SATOH Norito to Shanghai University at the university’s request, to discuss international collaborative research and the establishment and strengthening of medical-related fields. Although face-to-face interactions were suspended when the COVID-19 pandemic took place immediately after the visit to Shanghai University, online-based interactions have taken place.

As an activity for a “research university with a regional core and distinctive characteristics: Okayama University,” this interaction is one of our international research strategies that includes an improvement of the ability to conduct research and strengthening of the creation of innovations. Going forward, we will properly coordinate security arrangements and concerns, and will move ahead on a project basis so that both universities can work harmoniously, while striving to improve the ability to research and strengthen the creation of innovations. Your continued support for Okayama University, a research university with a regional core and distinctive characteristics, is greatly appreciated.

This research exchange meeting was implemented in accordance with research integrity, including security considerations.
