Training program to improve the quality of teaching and evaluation methodology in primary science and mathematics for educators from Africa has started at our university on June 4. The training program have been carried out as a part of regional “Training And Dialogue Program” by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) every year, and ten people involved in the Department of Education from Ghana, Tanzania and Zambia are receiving the training this year.

Although the rate of school attendance is improving in Africa, the quality of education needs to be improved. The training aims to improve the quality of elementary math and science education skills and to make effective teaching plans and the method of scholastic evaluation through classroom observations and lesson practices.

Dean of the Graduate School of Education, Shigenobu Takatuka, Professor at the International Center, Mariko Uzuka, Director Training Program Division of JICA Chugoku International Center, Takeo Ishikawa and others attended the opening ceremony which was held at the Faculty of Education Building. Prof. Uzuka addressed the assembly, “I hope the Japanese elementary students that you teach during your stay will someday have a chance to meet your students in Africa and build a more peaceful, better world together.” The trainees made a courtesy call on President Kiyoshi Morita on June 6, and expressed their enthusiasm.
