On August 31, Okayama University jointly organized a “Study in Japan Fair” in Yangon, Myanmar with the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) and the Consortium of Six National Universities in Japan. This event was held as part of the Study in Japan Global Network Project (ASEAN) commissioned by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and was the fourth such event organized by Okayama University.
Since more people in Myanmar have become interested in studying in Japan, the event attracted approximately 2,000 visitors (mainly high school and university students), who visited booths run by 40 institutions including 22 universities and seven Japanese language schools from Japan, as well as scholarship organizations and other related organizations.
At the opening ceremony, Prof. KIMURA Kunio, Vice President for International Affairs of Okayama University, delivered the opening address, followed by addresses by H.E. Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, Myanmar’s Minister of Education, and by H.E. Mr. MARUYAMA Ichiro, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Myanmar. Most notably, Minister Myo Thein Gyi expressed his gratitude to Japan for providing educational support, and his expectations for young Myanmarese students to receive high-level education and learn advanced technologies in Japan.
At the seminar, participants listened to explanations about scholarships and exams for studying in Japan. Myanmarese people who studied in Japan and are now employed by Japanese companies gave presentations about their career paths after graduation. This session was made possible through cooperation from the Myanmar-Japan Platform for Human Resource Development. At booths set up by participating institutions for individual consultation, many students earnestly asked questions and attentively listened to the explanations.
