Evidence for a PGF2α auto-amplification system in the endometrium in the mare

March 09, 2016

The collaborative research group from Obihiro University of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine, Okayama University, Shadai Farm, JRA and Polish Academy of Science showed that the prostaglandin (PG) F2αsecreted from the uterus in the regression of corpus luteum in mares has auto-amplification ability.
The findings were published online Feb. 23, 2016 in the journal of “Reproduction”.

In the ovary of the livestock such as mares and bovines, the tissue called corpus luteum (CL) is formed after ovulation. The hormone secreted by the CL maintains pregnancy. The next ovulation would be triggered by the regression of the CL. The administration of PG agent that induces the regression of CL is performed for efficient breeding of domestic animals.
However, the effective dosage of the PG agent is different from each animal. For example, the effective dosage for mares is one fifth of the one for bovines. The reason of the difference has been unknown for the long time.
This study showed that PGF2αhas auto-amplification ability in mares. The administration of PG agent stimulates the auto-amplification of PGF2α so that the small amount of the dosage of PG agent achieves the regression of CL in mares.
The findings are expected to lead to the more efficient breeding for mares and the understanding of the differences of the hormone sensitivity among animals.
