A briefing session was held on Okayama University’s Tsushima Campus for students planning to work as volunteers to help victims of the heavy rain event of July 2018. A total of 237 prospective volunteers participated in the session.
Speakers for the session were Dr. Masaru Kaga, Executive Vice President for Social Collaboration, Professor Yoshio Maeda, Vice-Director of Academic and General Okayama University Regional Research Association, Professor Hisao Suzuki, Office of Sport Support, Institute for Education and Student Services and Senior Assistant Professor Ken Aoo, Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering in Health Systems, who also serves as an adviser to the University’s crisis management team. They talked about rules and on-campus procedures for working as volunteers as well as other related topics. Senior Assistant Professor Aoo pointed out that disaster victims need a wide variety of support and emphasized that it is important for prospective volunteers to identify what they can do and what disaster victims need and try to provide long-term support. Professor Hisao Suzuki explained the conditions that put people at risk for heatstroke, as well as the appropriate timing and water intake needed while doing volunteer work.
