Plastic Surgery Department

Message from the Director of the Department

We have 17 staff members including 12 board-certified plastic surgeons. Our hospital is among the leading hospitals in Japan, covering most of the diseases in the plastic surgery field. Doctors familiar with each specialized field provide high-quality medical care.

Scope of Target Diseases

Plastic surgery is aimed at maintaining and improving the function and quality of life (QOL) by reconstruction of body deformities caused by injury or malignant disease, congenial abnormalities, etc. in a form close to normal. Specifically, it includes deformity following head and neck cancer surgery (loss of soft tissue and bone on the face, facial nerve paralysis, radiation sequelae, etc.), gender identity disorder (GID; sex reassignment surgery), deformation after breast surgery in breast cancer patient (immediate or delayed breast reconstruction), comprehensive treatment of lymphoedema (lymphovenous anastomosis, lymph node transplantation, volume reduction surgery, physical therapy), limbs lost because of trauma or tumor ablation, deformities of the face, scar contracture of skin, vascular malformation (angiomas, arteriovenous malformation, lymphangioma, etc.), congenital abnormalities (cleft lip and palate, other congenital limb abnormalities, craniofacial abnormalities), eyelid ptosis, eyelash inversion, hypertrophic scar, keloid, facial bone fracture, burns, and ulcers.

Features and Description of Medical Care

We all have microsurgical techniques (microscopic surgery) that can be used to restore the function and morphology of each part of the body, such as the head and neck, limbs, and breasts. In addition, in lymphedema patients, we use multidisciplinary treatments combining surgical treatment (lymphovenous anastomosis, vascularized lymph node transplantation, volume reduction surgery) and physical therapy (lymph drainage, compression therapy, etc.) under diagnosis by a special imaging inspection. In sex reassignment surgery for gender identity disorder patients, we conduct medical teams with psychiatrists, gynecologists, and urologists. We are accredited as a certified hospital for surgery by the GID Society. For treatment of craniofacial deformities in children, we cooperate with neurosurgeons, orthodontists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, and otolaryngologists to provide a higher quality of life. We also aggressively address rare diseases such as Apert syndrome and Crouzon disease.

For outpatient visits

We believe that it is important to conduct medical care with the patient based on a relationship of trust. We take care to provide the most appropriate medical care from the standpoint of the patient, considering the patient's desires, spiritual aspects, and social background. We emphasize joint conferences with other departments and strive to provide comprehensive and advanced medical care at all times. Additionally, we put effort into clinical research so that we can provide highly advanced medical care as a flagship hospital. We hope to contribute to the region through active presentation of our research at medical conferences in and out of Japan and through lectures that are open to the public.
