Message from the Director of the Department

It is said that 80% of a person’s information is collected visually. Therefore, it is important to maintain good vision capability to lead a healthy and quality-filled life. We ophthalmologists practice daily with the mission of protecting the eye health of patients. At the ophthalmology department at Okayama University Hospital, specialists in each disease provide cutting-edge medical care using the latest testing and treatment equipment. We are also engaged in the treatment of rare and intractable diseases, visual rehabilitation, and the development and research of new treatments for the future.

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataract
  • Corneal diseases
  • Ocular inflammation
  • Strabismus and amblyopia
  • Visual rehabilitation services

Features and Description of Medical Care

  1. Retinal diseases: diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, preretinal membrane, macular hole, ocular trauma, retinopathy of prematurity, etc. We perform surgery (vitreoretinal surgery), drug therapy (anti-angiogenic drugs, steroids) and laser therapy using state-of-the-art equipment. We also actively respond to ophthalmic emergencies.
  2. Glaucoma: We strive to improve treatment results to maintain long-term visual function through a combination of drug therapy, laser therapy, and surgery after accurate diagnosis using the latest examination equipment.
  3. Cataract: In addition to age-related cataracts, we also perform surgery for congenital cataracts and difficult cataracts. We also actively perform day surgery.
  4. Corneal diseases: keratoconus, infectious keratitis, bullous keratopathy, and other intractable keratitis.
  5. Ocular inflammation: We provide drug therapy using steroids and molecular targeted drugs, and surgery (vitrectomy) according to the condition.
  6. Strabismus and amblyopia: We provide training and surgery for strabismus. For strabismus surgery, minimally invasive small incision surgery is performed with consideration to cosmetic aspects for early recovery after surgery.
  7. Visual rehabilitation services are provided to patients with impaired visual function, including pruning of magnifiers and other assistive devices, provision of welfare-related information, consultation on daily life, schooling, employment, etc., and referral to related institutions and organizations. Free telephone consultation is available for patients residing in Okayama Prefecture who have difficulty coming to the clinic. For details, please visit the Ophthalmology Department's own website.
