What is the Sarcoma Treatment Center?
Sarcoma arising from bone and soft tissue can develop in any site of the body, such as the hand, foot, trunk, abdomen, or head and neck. Therefore, treatment requires multidisciplinary cooperation among various departments, including Orthopaedic Surgery, Hematology and Oncology, Gastroenterological Surgery, Urology, Gynecology and Pediatric Oncology. To date, no department has organized the entire sarcoma care including diagnosis and treatment. Patients who do not know what treatment they should receive are called sarcoma refugees. They are not many but remain an important issue that should be implemented. Given these backgrounds, the Sarcoma Treatment Center was established in April 2014 as the first of its kind in western Japan, to enhance collaboration among clinical departments and to provide appropriate diagnosis and treatment to patients with sarcoma. We have staff members from diverse clinical departments in Okayama University Hospital and provide the best treatment of sarcoma through close mutual collaborations.
