Minimally Invasive Therapy Center

Message from the Head of the Department

At the Minimally Invasive Therapy (MIT) Center in Okayama University Hospital, staff members work collaboratively across various medical departments to actively support the safe introduction and widespread use of endoscopic surgery. Endoscopic surgery has the great advantage of leaving small scars and causing little pain, shortening hospital stays, and allowing patients to return to work and society early. The center also contributes to the safe and efficient practice of robot-assisted surgery.

Activities and Features

Under the leadership of Director Toshiyoshi Fujiwara, our center comprises six full-time faculty members specializing in gastrointestinal surgery and urology. Additionally, we have adjunct faculty members from various departments, including hepatobiliary/pancreatic surgery and thoracic surgery, who are dedicated to providing medical care, education, and research in their respective fields of endoscopic surgery.

Management Policy

Our center aims to safely disseminate endoscopic surgery, a field requiring advanced skills, by practicing high-level surgical procedures. We are also actively involved in introducing new surgical techniques, such as robot-assisted surgery. Through education programs for residents and trainees and the organization of academic seminars, we cultivate a wide range of professionals and produce physicians who will become leaders in endoscopic surgery.

Clinical Practice

In our daily practice, we perform endoscopic and thoracoscopic surgeries across the specialties of digestive surgery, urology, and respiratory surgery.

  • Gastroenterological Surgery: Treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the esophagus, stomach, and large intestine, as well as tumors of the liver and pancreas.
  • Urology: Treatment of diseases affecting the prostate, bladder, and kidneys.
  • Thoracic Surgery: Treatment of benign diseases such as lung conditions, mediastinal tumors, and pneumothorax.
Furthermore, our center promotes education and research in endoscopic surgery, striving to improve techniques and develop new knowledge.
